In order to meet the needs of those of you who registered for the online class through YALSA, it would be helpful to know if there are specific questions, subjects, or areas you would like me to address. So, post questions or requests here.

I would like it if those who have hosted successful tween programs in their libraries would post some information about those programs. What was it that made the program work? Would you do this program again? What are the postive and negative issues associated with this program?

I discovered there is a word limit, so I will try to give you the information in 2 or 3 comments.

At the East Meadow Public Library we began a series of programs this month called TWEEN TUESDAYS for 6th and 7th graders. The first one was ROCK BAND with the PS2 and had zero attendance. Yesterday we had our second program the film, CORALINE and had seven tweens. I am planning two more programs in November. The first is Wii Play afternoon and there will be board games too. The second November program is Balloon Art Workshop. Since we have a limited program budget, we must used films from the library dvd collection and our gaming platforms.

As I said, this is in its infancy. This program is patterned after one at the Kalmazoo Public Library. You might want to check out their Tween web page http://www.kpl.gov/tweens/ I actually spoke with the Head of Teen Services, and was told the Tween concept was a collaborative program between children's and teen services.

Part 2
Last April we began a tween advisory board, which has been named the TWEEN TITANS. It meets monthly between October and May. We have 15 members in grades 6 and 7. This is our sounding board for TWEEN programming. Having this board has allowed our teen advisory board to be all teens in grades 8 to 12 and lets them discuss what they feel they need without the constant distraction from the younger members. At the first meeting of the year the tween board selected a label marked tween to be placed upon appropriate titles in the YA Room.

We also created a summer volunteer project specifically for those tween entering grade 7. It was called SHELF HELP and they would read the shelves and keep everything in order and edged, so our YA Room looked neat all summer. It was conceived, because our BOOK BUDDY program is for grades 8 to 12.

So far, the TWEEN TITANS and SHELF HELP are real keepers; I have to wait and see about TWEEN TUESDAYS. Unfortunately, we do not have a collaborative situation with our Children's Room. I am hoping they can be convinced to use the TWEEN spine labels, if only to help the Parents.
